Whether you can’t wait for vacation—or you’re being dragged along on one—planning can help.”  Zaks&#8217; article, “Dreaming of Summer Vacation—Maybe,” offers insights for autistic adults and their families to make summer adventures a bit less stressful.</p>

<p>Zaks, who was diagnosed with autism at age 31, is also the parent of two daughters on the autism spectrum. She is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor, and author of the book “Life and Love: Positive Strategies for Autistic Adults.”  Zaks resides in Maryland, serves on the boards of several local and national autism organizations and was appointed to the Maryland Commission on Autism.  She is one of five writers at Autism After 16 who is autistic; most other contributors have family members with autism. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The website Autism After 16 was developed to address issues facing the growing population of autistic adults and their families. “We purposely hired writers with different experiences, different voices,” says editor Merope Pavlides. “Our goal is to reach out to families and provide information and analysis on a variety of issues from a variety of perspectives. Everything from education to finances to building better community relationships.  What many of our articles have in common, however, is a focus on thoughtful planning. Even when thinking about summer vacation!”</p>

<p>Zaks also notes the value of good information.  “Families planning for adulthood now have the benefit of lots of information we didn’t have when I was growing up,” she says. “Instead of fumbling in the dark, we can help autistic adults reach their potential and obtain a good quality of life.”</p>

So Elisa Makunga and David Madsen decided to show the world the L.A. they love and to debunk the myths that tourists and locals alike believe about Los Angeles.</p>

<p>True citizens of the city of perpetual re-invention, Makunga and Madsen combined the experiences and frustrations of earlier careers to create LA Electric Travel, a new on-line guide to seeing Los Angeles by Metro Rail.  They’ve also just released a guide book companion to the site, “L.A. Adventures: Eclectic Day trips by Metro Rail Through Los Angeles and Beyond”. The travel guide features 14 day trips and 100 things to do in L.A.  The website takes visitors to over 330 attractions in Los Angeles by Metro Rail.  “All of L.A. intersects here,” says Makunga.  “Art, culture, food, music, sports, famous landmarks and off-the-wall destinations such as the Bunny Museum or Chicken Boy.  We like to highlight local businesses: mom and pop cigar stores, artisans who make handmade flamenco guitars, Korean immigrant-run foot massage shops, neighborhood yoga studios, pagan apothecaries who will prepare a custom-made love potion for you.” </p>

<p>Madsen is a produced screenwriter, used to battling Hollywood’s gatekeepers and their fear-based decision-making.  “I needed to produce something that was creative and personal, where “no” wasn’t the default response,” Madsen says. Makunga was a mediator, whose work as a human relations specialist had taken her to every neighborhood in Los Angeles County.  They both love exploring the city, and despite occasional threats to defect to a hammock on a Zanzibar beach or a goat farm in Northern California, they knew they would always be Angelenos.  “We built this business to prove to the world that there’s a vast, unvisited canvas out there that people miss if they stay in their cars,” says Makunga.  “We don’t have corporate or civic sponsors, so all the attractions listed on L.A. Electric Travel reflect our personal tastes and opinions.”</p>

<p>Madsen and Makunga believe Los Angeles is in the middle of a renaissance  “Changes are happening every day in L.A. at the sidewalk level,” says Makunga. “Every neighborhood has its Art Walk; companies like Melting Pot and Urban Food Crawl offer walking food tours.  There are meetups that sponsor Metro riding trips.  Downtown has revitalized, with attractions such as The Grammy Museum and L.A. Live easily reachable by  Metro Rail.  The mayor of this freeway entangled city is an energetic evangelizer for mass transit.  The city’s new Bike Share Program hopes to put 4,000 GPS-linked rental bikes on the streets of L.A. within two years.  Crime has dropped for nine straight years. Social networking platform developments led to a shift in vendors&#8217; marketing strategies toward communicating a unique vision to consumers. “Less expensive and more effective online communication, however, has also lowered the barriers to entry for firms by enabling anyone to market to the same demographics as established businesses,” continues Kaczanowska. Such improved marketing channels are expected to drive enterprise growth at an annualized rate of 1.7% to 475,958 in the five years to 2012. There are no identifiable major players in this industry. The Wedding Services industry is fragmented because it is composed of a wide variety of highly specialized vendors, including florists, venue providers and bridal gown retailers. There are some venues that offer wedding packages with a majority of services included. However, most of these venues have only one location and still outsource to small businesses for these services. Many of these venues are located in Las Vegas, which is known for eloping and spur-of-the-moment ceremonies. </p>

<p>The number of marriages is forecast to continue declining in the five years to 2017; however, it is not expected to dramatically impact industry performance. The amount spent on weddings is estimated to grow over the next five years as the demand for large, costly weddings rises in response to higher disposable income. As the average marriage age and length of engagement further increase, couples will have more time to plan and save money for their ceremonies. A slow but steady increase in consumer spending is also projected to support revenue growth. As a result, industry revenue is projected to rise in the five years to 2017. Patel, CHO, Allentown, Pa., received the Outstanding Young Professional Hotelier Award, which recognizes an individual under the age of 30 who has displayed a potential for development and success, and who has exemplified the spirit, dedication and professional achievement of the Asian American hotelier.&#13;<br />
     Kalpana K. Patel, CHO, Los Angeles, Calif., received the Outstanding Woman Hotelier of the Year Award, which recognizes the woman hotelier who has demonstrated strong leadership qualities, a commitment to lodging excellence, and made significant contributions to the industry and her community.&#13;<br />
     Jagdip “Jags” Patel, CHO, Arlington, Texas, received the Cecil B. Day Community Service Award, which recognizes an individual who has demonstrated a strong commitment to serving the Asian American community.&#13;<br />
     U.S. Representative Joe Crowley (D-NY) and U.S. Representative Ed Royce (R-CA) each received the Political Forum Award for Advocacy, which recognizes an individual who is extensively involved with helping advance AAHOA’s mission and the concerns of its members by participating in the legislative process through political involvement and government affairs.&#13;<br />
     Chottubhai Patel, Greensboro, N.C., received the Outreach Award for Philanthropy, which recognizes an individual who is deeply involved with philanthropic and charitable activities, either locally or abroad, by helping the cause of humanity at large.&#13;<br />
     Grand View Inn, Hermosa Beach, Calif., owned by Amish Desai, received the IAHA Independent Hotel of the Year Award, which honors an independent hotel that sets a high standard of excellence in quality, service and guest satisfaction.
